What the Americans, and the British, are bringing to the fair
By Rachel Deahl, Liz Thomson and Nicholas Clee -- Publishers Weekly, 9/28/2009
Taryn Fagerness Agency
The California agency has Kathryn Johnson's The Gentleman Poet (Avon, summer 2010), a novel that works off the notion that Shakespeare's The Tempest was inspired by a real shipwreck. The agency also has Matthew Dicks's Unexpectedly Milo (Broadway, summer 2010), about a husband in a failing marriage who's trying to figure out what went wrong. There's also the debut title in Amazon's fiction program, AmazonEncore, Cayla Kluver's Legacy: A Novel. The book, which the e-tailer published in August, was originally self-published by Kluver, a Wisconsin teenager, and is primarily repped by the Marsal Lyon Literary Agency; rights sold in a number of countries including Australia, Germany, Greece, Italy, Japan and Spain.

Fagerness Plunges Into Foreign Territory Solo
Galley Cat, March 24, 2009
"I've been involved with helping people get published at, what seems like, all stages of my life," Taryn Fagerness emailed us yesterday. "High school newspaper editor. College literary magazine editor. Various publishing related internships. Agenting has long been my dream job." Five years ago, she got her break in the mail room (okay, we suspect it's probably more like a desk) of San Diego-based über-agent Sandra Dijkstra, and was soon promoted to subsidiary rights manager chair. "I love being a link in what I call the 'chain of enthusiasm,'" Fagerness continued. "An author must get an agent enthusiastic about her manuscript. The agent gets an editor excited. The editor gets the marketing department on board. All the way down to the bookseller and reader. Selling foreign rights is the ultimate link in that chain—the branching out point. I get people in Holland, Japan, Estonia, etc. excited about books."
And she's gotten good enough at creating that excitement that she's ready to start her own agency, where she's already picked up a fair amount of work handling foreign rights for other literary agents (and, in a few cases, audiobook and film rights, too). According to her website, Fagerness takes on "nearly all genres, including literary fiction, thriller/suspense, commercial fiction, romance, history, self-help, business, and children's," and her clients include the Marsal Lyon Literary Agency, the Andrea Brown Literary Agency and Martin Literary Management. She also has a handful of authors as clients for domestic book deals, but is not accepting any unsolicited submissions.
Fagerness Launches Agency
By Rachel Deahl -- Publishers Weekly, 3/17/2009 8:02:00 AM
Taryn Fagerness, former subrights manager at the California-based Sandra Dijkstra Literary Agency, is setting off on her own and has founded her own eponymous agency. Fagerness, who will represent a handful of American authors, will focus on handling subsidiary rights--largely foreign, but also some audio and film--on behalf of other agents and publishers. Fagerness said that over the years she's met a number of agents who seemed to need help on the subsidiary rights side. The Taryn Fagerness Agency currently has five clients, among them the Andrea Brown Literary Agency and the newly-formed Marsal Lyon Literary Agency.
